UNIT 1 : THE LETTER A
Lesson 1

I- Objectives : By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
Recognize and pronounce the letter Aa and its sound correctly
Understand, recognize and say the three Aa words
Write the letter Aa

Warm-up (5 mins)
Greet students by saying: Hello, my name is …..
Have students take turns to say hello and introduce their names
Or
Have students sing and do actions with the Hello Song by Peter Weatherall

Presentation & Practice
1. Listen, point and repeat. Colour (Track 02): Introduction of letter A, its sound and how to pronounce the words beginning with Aa (7 mins)
Use a card with letter Aa (or write on board the letter Aa) to introduce to the students the new lesson.
Instruct students how to pronounce the letter name and the letter sound by saying: “This is the letter A /((/. The letter A says /(/.”
Repeat several times and check students’ pronunciation (letter A /((/ and its sound /(/)
Use the phonics cards with ant, apple, and alligator, read the words out loud and have students repeat.
Use gestures (hand actions) to help students to

understand the meanings of the three words.
Stick the cards on board and have students repeat the words chorally several times (in the correct order and then in any order).
Call some students to say the words out loud and correct their mistakes (if any)
Have students color the letter Aa

Activity: Sit and Stand Game (3 mins)
Show the 3 phonics cards one by one. For example, show the card with ant, but incorrectly say alligator or apple, the students will stand; if the words are correctly said, they will stay sitting.
Do the same procedure for the other two cards.
Give feedback

2. Listen and point. Colour. (Track 03): Read the words with preceding “an” (5 mins)
Have students look at the screen and listen to the words: an ant, an apple, an alligator
Have students listen and repeat the words for several times
Give feedback

Activity: Touching Game (5 mins)
Put the 3 phonics cards on the board in this order: ant, apple, alligator.
Divide the class into 2 teams; call one student of each team to stand 1m from the board
Read one of the three words out loud (e.g. an ant), students must run to tap the card of that word.
Student who taps the correct card first will get 1 point for his/her team.
Call 4-6 students per team to the board if possible
Give feedback

3. Chant and show! (Track 04) (5 mins)

Use the phonics cards on the board and have students sing the chant with ant. Do the same with apple and alligator.
The whole class sings the whole chant. Do the chant again using gestures for each word.
Give feedback

Production (5 mins)
Activity 1: Writing in the air
Show the letter Aa again, have students write the Aa in air with their fingers.

Activity 2: Write down the words into Students’ notebook
Ask students write down: Aa, ant, apple, alligator into their notebook

E.g. Teacher: (Show the ‘ant’ card). Say ’ant’
Class: (wriggling their fingers as if ants are crawling) /(/ ant
Or
Have students sing the chant in lesson 1, keep the rhythm by clapping their hands or snapping their fingers

Presentation & Practice
Lead-in Activity: Act It Out Game (5 mins)
Choose a student to come to the front of the class. Show him/her a phonics card or whisper a word, and have student act it
