Development and consolidation.
Exercise 1. Look at examples and make similar statements about the following.
Example:
• A square is a kind of rectangle, but not all rectangles are squares.
• A right-angled triangle is a kind of triangle, but not all triangles are right-angled.
a) rhombus; parallelogram
b) parallelogram; trapezium
c) isosceles triangle; triangle
d) isosceles triangle; equilateral triangle
e) rectangle ; plane figure
Exercise 2. Read the passages below and then complete the following sentences
• All the sides of an equilateral triangle are equal, and so are those of a rhombus
• Opposite sides of a parallelogram are parallel and so are those of a regular hexagon.
a) Opposite sides of a rectangle are equal, and so are ......
b) All the angles of a square are right angles, and so are ......
c) All the sides of a regular hexagon are equal, and so are ......
d) All the sides of an equilateral triangle ......
e) All the angles of an equilateral triangle......
Exercise 3. Read and fill the gaps with the correct words.
In plane geometry an angle is a(6) ........................... that is formed by two (7)........................... lines that meet at a point. The lines of an angle are called the (8)............................ The point where they meet is called the (9)............................... When the sides of an angle are (10)............................... to each other, they form a right angle. A right angle (11)................................ ninety degrees. An angle of less than 900 is (12)........................... acute angle, and an angle of more than 900 but less than 1800 is an (13)........................... angle. An angle of more than 1800 is a (14).................................. angle.
Exercise 4. Read and fill the gaps with the correct words.
The Circle
A circle is a plane (1) … figure. The side of a circle is (2)… the circumference. All the points on the (3)… of a circle are equidistant from the (4)... A straight line which is drawn from the (5)… of a circle to (6)… circumference is called a (7)… All the radii of a circle are equal. The area between two radii is called a (8)…. A straight line drawn between one part of the circumference and another is known as a (9)…. A chord (10)… a circle into two (11)… and the circumference into two arcs. A chord (12)… passes through the centre of a circle is called a diameter.
