Comment on the SD employed in the following statement:
“ With that he took me down, and tied the placard, which was neatly constructed for the purpose, on my shoulder like a knapsack”
DAVID COPPERFIELD
by Charles Dickens
(1812-1870)
The Great Literary Commoner
David was a pitiful boy. When he was born, his father died. He didn’t have father’s love, he only had mother’s love.
For the love of father missing so his mother give him all her love. David loved his mother very much.
David’s mother remarried 7 years after her husband’s death. That was Mr. Murdstone. Suddenly, David had a stepfather, he couldn’t accept. In his capacity as stepfather, Mr. Murdstone treated with David by cruelty. David lived with cruel stepfather and feeble mother. David’s mother couldn’t protect David from the cruel stepfather.
David was treated by stepfather’s unusually, so David’s character changed; he became head-strong. Mr. Murdstone did not like the boy and wanted to separate mother and son. As one of his friends kept a boarding house in a suburb of London, Mr. Murdstone decided to send David there to get rid of him.
Salem house was a square brick building with wings of the bare and unfurnished appearance. All about it was so very quiet. David was sent in holiday time as a punishment for his misdoing.
He had to wear a placard with these words “ Take care of him. He bites”. David wore a light placard but the letters on the placard was very heavy “ Take care of him. He bites”. He thought that he was wearing a big knapsack. That heaviness did not due to that placard, that was ashamed sensation when he wore that placard.
A little boy had to stand desolation, didn’t he? When seeing that placard, anyone also thought that “ Take care of dog”. David thought that, when he saw it at the first time. It wasn’t made to warn the pupils but to publish the pupils or took them down.
If you wore a placard like that, what would you feel? Perhaps, you felt ashamed. And David also felt like that. When he went to school with that placard, he felt isolated and lonely and no one wanted to make friend with him.
School educated people but it made David become a silly clown. If someone scolded you among crowd, everybody also listened, but they forget later. But wearing a placard with these words like that, when every one read, they thought you were a dog. And they would remember that thing forever.
David was ashamed when he wore this placard every day. It effected his thought badly. “ Whether it was possible for people to see me or not, I always fancied that somebody was reading it”. They laughed at him.
Charles’s tones in this chapter seems to criticize and satirize people who did not respected personality. This placard separated David and his friend.
Children also know what is right or wrong. They was hurt easily.
Children is young talent of our future.
Love and respect children!
