UNIT 14: THE WORLD CUP
Lesson A: READING

I. Objectives: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to:
1. Knowledge:
- Vocabulary:
- Structure: to know more about the past simple tense and passive voice.
2. Skills: develop such reading micro-skills as scanning for specific information, intensive reading for details, and guessing meaning in context.
3. Attitude: Ss would like to talk about the World Cup.
II. Preparations:
1. Teacher: book, piece of papers
2. Students: Pictures.
III. Anticipated problems: Students may not have sufficient vocabulary to talk about the topic, so T should be ready to assist them.

I. Warm-up (5’)
- Thisisoneof the mostpopularsports in the world?


II. Pre-reading
1. Answer the questions in page 142 (3’)
- T goes around and helps.
- T calls some Ss answer
- T checks and gives feedback.
- T gives the key.
2. Teach vocabulary (4’):
- T pre-teaches vocabulary.
- T calls on some Ss to read again.
- T listens and corrects Ss’ pronunciation mistakes.
- T gives feedback.
- T introduces another part.















II. While-reading (20’):
*Task 1:
- T instructs Ss to read the passage quickly and stop at the lines that contain these words to guess their meanings
- T asks Ss to check their answers with a partner and then calls some Ss to give answers and explain that.




*Task 2:
- T asks Ss to do the task individually and then in pairs.
- T goes around and helps.
- T corrects Ss’ answers.






*Task 3:
- T asks Ss to repeat the process they`ve gone through when doing Task 2, i.e. they skim the questions.
- T calls some Ss to give and explain their answers.
- T gives correct feedback.











III. Post-reading (10’):
- Lucky football team
There are 6 questions
- T asks Ss to go back to the text and find out the events related to these figures.
- T gets Ss to work in small groups of 3 or 4 and take turn to talk about the history of the World Cup, basing themselves on their notes.















2. Summary:
- T summarizes the main points.


3. Homework:
- T asks Ss to learn all the new words
- T asked Ss write a short paragraph about the history of the WC basing on the completed table above.






- Ss answer the questions.
