Introduction
In my previous post, I discussed corporate etiquette which goes hand and hand with verbal and non-verbal communication. In this post I want to elaborate on communication in regards to body language.
Verbal communication is conveyed through speech or writing; while non-verbal communication consists of gestures, noises, and/or body language. When communicating, both verbal and non-verbal communication are occurring simultaneously. Since some gestures can have different meanings, non-Canadians should educate themselves before engaging in business relations.
It is quite usual to forget about many aspects of non-verbal communication when hearing this notion. In fact, what comes to mind immediately are body gestures or facial expressions. However, there are many more aspects.
For this reason, beginning with a definition of non-verbal communication in Canada. They also show the importance of non-verbal communication in daily life.
Sign-language, one form of non-verbal communication, is not discussed in this essay. In fact, this is a language in itself. Even if body gestures and facial expressions are part of this language, which would correspond to the definition of non-verbal communication in chapter two, it cannot be regarded as non-verbal communication. Sign-language is a system closed in itself and needs special training as well as for any other natural language. Therefore, this aspect of interpretation was not taken into account for our essay.

Definition of non-verbal communication in Canada
There are scores of definitions that researchers and scholars use to define non-verbal communication. Among the definitions we have studied, we chose and developed the points that seemed essential to us with respect to the frame of interpretation that is given for this essay.
Non-verbal communication consists of all the messages other than words that are used in communication. In oral communication, these symbolic messages are transferred by means of intonation, tone of voice, vocally produced noises, body posture, body gestures, facial expressions or pauses (see chapter 3. examples).
When individuals speak, they normally do not confine themselves to the mere emission of words. A great deal of meaning is conveyed by non-verbal means which always accompany oral discourse – intended or not. In other words, a spoken message is always sent on two levels simultaneously, verbal and non-verbal.

CANADA
1. It is polite to maintain good eye contact. Men rise when women enter the room. It is considered bad manners to eat while on the street.
2. No excessive gesturing.
3. People stand about a half-meter apart when conversing.
4. Women greet with a slight nod.
5. Men greet with a firm handshake.
For example:
"Thumbs down" is considered offensive in Quebec, as is slapping an open palm over a closed fist. Like the rest of their countrymen and women, French-Canadians use the "thumbs up" sign to mean "okay. "The "okay" sign made with the index finger and thumb means "zero" in Quebec.
One-eyed wink has a several meanings in Canada depending on the conversation. It can suggest that what is being said is a secret and you should not tell other people if the conversation is about something important, especially if being said in private or quietly. A one-eyed wink can also be a sign of confidence when someone is making a bold claim. It can also be used to flirt with someone of the opposite sex in social settings. Just be sure that you are using it in the right context.
I have only touched the surface. If you plan on building a business relationship with Canada, be sure and do further research on their customs and behaviors. Because you may want to know it`s considered rude by many in Quebec to talk with your hands in your pockets or that eating while walking in public is not acceptable. Things Americans do automatically.
Non-verbal behaviour predates verbal communication because individuals, since birth, rely first on non-verbal means to express themselves. This innate character of non-verbal behaviour is important in communication. Even before a sentence is uttered, the hearer observes the body gestures and facial expressions of the speaker, trying to make sense of these symbolic messages. They seem to be trustable because they are mostly unconscious and part of every-day behaviour. People assume that non-verbal actions do not lie and therefore they tend to believe the
