- Diễn tảmột hành động đã đang xảy ra tại một thời điểm xác định trong quá khứ
- Diễn tả 1 hành động diễn ra trong 1 khoảng thời gian xác định ở quá khứ (from … to)
- Diễn tả một hành động đang diễn ra trong quá khứ bất chợt có 1 hành động khác xen vào (chia ở thì quá khứ đơn, có liên từ WHEN) Hành động nào xãy ra trước dùng quá khứ tiếp diễn, hành động nào xãy ra sau dùng quá khứ đơn
- Diễn tả 2 hành động xảy ra song song với nhau (có liên từ WHILE)
- Chú ý nghĩa của câu; vị trí từ while
