Unit 5: STUDY HABITS


I. OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the lesson, students will
1. Educational aim:
- Distinguish various ways of learning vocabulary.
- Find the most suitable way for them to learn words effectively.
2. Knowledge
a. General knowledge
-Explain some terms of learning language: mother tongue, learn by heart, underline, highlight, revision,………
b. Language
-Enlarge vocabulary
-Use some structures in the text
3. Skills
-Skimming (gist information), guessing the words in context
-Scanning (detail information)
-Doing True /False exercise and answer the questions.

1. Check attendance and revise


- T calls 2 Ss to go to the board to check the previous lesson.
- T asks the 1st student some vocabulary and the meanings they have learnt before and give 4 sentences to fill in the blanks
( 1 mk or each and 1 mk for clear notebook)















- T asks the 2nd to do some command reported speech






- T checks, corrects and gives mark



- Some words in the text book (p 46,47)

. Can I use your dictionary? I don’t know how to pronouce this word
. There are two semesters in a school year.

- Mr.Brown told Ann, “Please give me some more paper”( Mr.Brown asked Ann to give him some more paper.
- He told his wife “Don’t cut open all the chickens!” ( He told his wife not to cut open all the chickens
- Nam told Lan “Can you put the vase on the table?” ( Nam told Lan to put the vase on the table or Nam told Lan if she could put the vase on the table



- The 1st student writes the word and meanings, then do the given exercises.



















- 2nd student changes the sentences
- The rest of the class observe, check and see if their friends if they are right or wrong

2. Warm up and lead-in




- T asks Ss about what they learnt in “ Listen & read”.
- Is Tim’s school report card good?
- What does he need to improve
- T asks Ss to discuss in groups answering the questions and their way of learning vocabulary


- Do you find English vocabulary is difficult?
- How do you learn new words?
How many words do you learn everyday? How do you learn some words that we can’t translate into Vietnamese? ex: pizza, pastry …



- T leads in the lesson by delivering some notes for them to match about ways of learning words



















Enclosed handouts
- some ways are: highlight, underline, write many times, learn by family words, learn by examples…

- The whole class

Yes, but he needs to improve his Spanish pronunciation

3. Today’s lesson
3.1 Pre- reading (Ss have to close the books)


- Teacher teaches the vocabulary using pictures, examples, explanation.












- T pronounces the words, explains and calls some students repeat

- mother tongue (n) [`mʌđətʌηtiếng mẹ đẻ
Ex: Vietnamese is our mother tongue
- learn by heart (v): học thuộc lòng
- come across(vkʌm ə`krɔs]: gặp phải
Ex: Come across to my office tomorrow if you have free time.
- underline (v)[ `ʌndəlain]
: gạch chân
- highlight (v)[ `hailait]
: làm nổi bật
- revise (v) [ri`vaiz]
( revision (n) [ri`viʒn]
