I – Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Distinguish the sounds /s/ and /z/
- Pronounce the words and sentences containing these sounds correctly.
- Use “to + infinitive” to express purposes and make “wh – questions” appropriately.

Pronunciation
15 mins
- Teacher introduces two sounds and plays the tape for students to hear the sounds. Then teacher explains how to pronounce them. /s/ is unvoiced and /z/ is voiced.
- Teacher asks students to practice pronouncing two sounds.
- Teacher plays the tape for students to hear the words containing the sounds and asks them to repeat.
- Teacher calls some students to read the words containing sounds.
- Teacher gives some ways to realize two sounds:
/s/:
s: some, yes
ss: class, discuss
c: city, nice
sc: scene, scenery
/z/
z: size, prize
zz: puzzle
s: busy, because
se: these, cause
*)Note: with plural noun and verbs in present simple
/s/: after unvoiced sounds
Example: asks, tops, hats
/z/: after voiced sounds
Example: plays, peas, lives
- Teacher plays the tape for students to hear the sentences and asks students to underline the words that contain the sounds.
- Teacher asks students to read the sentences and practice more at home.

- Teacher shows some sentences containing “to + inf” and asks students to give comments on the use of “to + inf”.
It is used to express the purposes and it answers the question “What …for”
- Teacher asks students to give example

- Teacher asks students to do exercise 1 and 2 on the board (with exercise 2, teacher helps students to find the suitable verbs to fill in the sentences)
- Teacher goes around the class and helps students do the exercises.
- Teacher checks the answer and give feedback.

Wh question

- Teacher gives a wh – question that use “why” and explains that it is equal to question “what … for”
- Teacher explains “why” is a “wh word” and used to express the purposes. Beside “why” there are many Wh words such as:
Who – person
When – time
Where – place
What – Object/ idea/ action
How – manner
- Teacher gives an example and asks students to give the questions with the underlined word.
- Then, teacher gives the form of wh – question with each wh word
Who/What + verb (who/what = subject)
What/when/where/how/why + auxiliary + verb – infinitive
- Teacher asks students to give example.
- Teacher asks some students to do exercise 3 on the board.
- Teacher asks other students to work in pairs and checks.
