ASIAN parenting and Mexican parenting
Amy Chua who is the author of the book,” Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother”, has raised successfully two daughters because she is always strict with her daughters. Controlling everything in children’s lives is the way Asian parents make their kids to be the best. Asian parents choose control is the way to teach their children, but Mexican parents have another way to teach their children. What are the similarities and differences between Asian parents and Mexican parents?
Asian parents and Mexican parents are both strict, but Asian parents force their children to do everything and Mexican parents just encourage their children.
Asian parents control everything in their children’s lives.
They want their children to spend time for studying instead of playing computer games or chatting with friends. In the article,” Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior”, Amy Chua who is the writer of this article wrote that she has always acted strictly with her daughters. She has forced her daughters to play piano 3 hours a day and demanded good grades in school. She never accepts any grades lower than an A. She also has her own rules that her daughters are never allowed to do such as, hanging out with friends, having a date with someone they like, or staying after school to join some activities. Amy has used all of these strict things on her daughters, so they always follow everything she wants. Asian parents not only manage their children’s study but also control their children’s time and activities. For them, nothing in this world is fun except the excellence of their children.
Mexican parents teach their children loyalty, dignity, friendliness, affection, and respectability. Those are some of the qualities, which every kid in a Mexican family must know. Mexican parents set up the groundwork for academic excellence, social grace, and sports. They also teach their children how to avoid the interpersonal conflicts and develop relationships in the society. All children in a Mexican family must be obedient, courteous, and respect the adults. Especially, Mexican parents treat their children differently based on gender.
The sons in a family are always more important than the daughters and they always get more love from their parents. In the article:” Only daughter”, Sandra Cisneros wrote that,” Being an only daughter in a family is very lonely”. She has grown up in a family that her brothers never wanted to play with her in public. It was just because of one thing that she is a girl. Mexican parents teach their children by traditional thinking, and they have always treated their children unequally. In fact, they pay more attention to their sons than their daughters.
Mexican parents and Asian parents have their own way to teach their children, but they are both strict in the same way. They both never express their love through hugs, kiss, or praise. They raise kids by discipline. In the movie,” Akeelah and the Bee”, Dylan’s father always wants Dylan to be the best, so he was always strict with Dylan. Although Dylan gained the third or the second places in the spelling bee contests, he would never smile. For him, only the first place was enough. June who is one of the figures in the “Joy Luck Club” movie is the same as Dylan.
June’s mother forced her to play and attend a lot of piano contests. At that time, she has been always tried to be the best. One time, she couldn’t do it. That made her mother very disappointed in her. Asian children never make their parents satisfied if they don’t do well at everything. Mexican parents also teach their children in the way they like, but it isn’t as strict as Asian parents. In the article” Only Daughter”, Sandra Cisneros’s father wanted her to go to college in order to find a husband because he didn’t have any use for school. That is the characteristic of Mexican parents. They like their daughters to stay at home to do house work and learn how to cook. Especially, they want their children to get married early instead of being successful.
Asian parents forced their children do everything they want, but Mexican parents just encourage. Asian parents think they know what things are good and what things are bad for their children, so they
