Bui Thi My was born on 18th September 1963 in the town of Hoi An in the West coast of Vietnam. She went to Hoi An secondary school when she was a student until 1981.
When she left school she went to the Hue college of music, where she studied traditional classical music. She learned how to play the classical music of Ca Hue. She became expert at playing many instruments. She graduated from college in 1984. She played for the Hue National Orchestra for two years. She became a member of the Vietnamese State Orchestra one year later. She performs concerts both in Vietnam and in foreign countries with the State Orchestra.
In 1992 she married Tran Quoc Hoa, also a musician. They have a son and a daughter.
