Some pair or groups of words ar confusing becoz they are similar in sound.
Advice and advise
Advice (noun)
Advise(verb)
Alike /like
The adjective alike shows similarity btw 2 or more nouns and usu follows these nouns.
Like is a preposition and must be followed by a noun object.
Almost /most
The adverb almost means nearly or not entirely .
The adjective most means the greatest , amount or number.
Almost all sports clothing is designed for a specific activity.
Most sports clothing is designed for a specific activity.
Another/other/the other/others
An other is used only with singular nouns.
Other means more of the groups and can modify either uncountable nouns and plural nouns.
The plural pronouns others means different members of a group.
The adjective or pronoun the other means the rest of the group.
Ex :
This book is boring. Give me another.
I have 2 brothers. One is a doctor, the other is a teacher.
These book are boring. Give me others.
I have 4 brothers one is a doctor. Others are teachers
( the others =the other + noun ( so nhieu)
Besides/beside
Prep beside means next to.
The conjuction adv besides means also or in addition to.
Especially /special
Especially (adv)
Special (adjective)
Lay/lie
Lay means put or set and must be followed by a direct objects
Lie has 2 meanings + repose(lie)
+not tell the truth
Near/nearly
Prep near means not far from
The adv nearly means almost
Raise /rise
Raise must followed by direct object
Rise can not be followed by a direct object.
Then /than
Than : conjunction
Then : adv
Their /there
Their :possessive adjective
Then :adverb
Some pairs or groups of words are confusing becoz they are similar in meaning :
Amount /number/quantity
Amount and quantity are used with countable nouns. Number is used with countable nouns.
And /also
And is a conjunction(connection word)
Also is a adverb
As /like
As means in the role or function of .
Like means similar to
I work as a teacher.
Like other members in my family, I love pet.
Between/among
Between shows a relationship of 2 things.
Among shows a relationship of three or more things.
Do/make
Do means perform of finish.
Make means creat, produce, or cause.
During/while
The preposition during is followed by a noun object.
The adverb while is followed by a clause.
Too/very
Too usu expresses a negative result caused by sth excessive.
Very means excessly but does not always express a cause result relationship.
