Scotland Yard is investigating startling new medical evidence which reveals that the boy Pharaoh, Tutankhamun, who came to the throne aged nine and reigned for only ten years, could have been murdered. His body was discovered by British archaeologists Howard Carter and the Earl of Carnavon in 1922. While digging in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt, they came across `the greatest treasure ever found`. Peering into a tomb, they saw ` strange animals, statues and gold`, but the most important discovery was the magnificent gold mask of the King. The tomb, hadn`t given up all its secrets. Nearly half a century later, X-rays showed possible evidence of damage to the brain.

TUTANKHAMUN
Reopening the case after 3000 years, Scotland Yard is examining the evidence and trying to identify the killer. Several people might have wanted to get rid of the young King. Ay, his chief adviser, who may have been related to him, took over the throne after his death and married his widow. There was also General Horemheb, the most likely person to succeed the childless Tutankhamun. Horemheb later became Pharaoh after Ay. He destroyed the monuments of Tutankhamun and the young King`s father-in-law, and added the years of their reigns to his own.
The man leading the investigation is a former Detective Inspector on the murder squad. So, what facts are there for him to look at? A mummified corpse with a head injury and no mention of the King in official records suggest a possible cover-up. Someone must have wanted Tutankhamun and his father-in-law written out of the records. Did it require a conspiracy or could one person do it alone? In order to kill a king, you must be able to get past the guards. This type of murder, a blow to the head, could be hidden and not easily seen. But whoever did it would need help. Perhaps from the army
What is needed is a pathologist`s report. A 3000 years -old `whodunnit` is not an easy case. There is no scene of the crime to dust, little scope for forensics, and no witnesses to interview. All the evidence is circumstantial
Several weeks after the star of the investigation, the pathologist is able to confirm that a close examination of the X-ray of the head shows that the fracture to the skull was there before the King died. He agrees that this could have been the cause of death. It doesn`t prove absolutely that the King was murdered but it`s as near as we are going to get!
What brought all this about is unclear. Tutankhamun was the ruler of one of the greatest nations in the ancient world. But his father-in-law was a dictator who had rejected the old religion and tried to force a new one on the people. Once Tutankhamun was on the throne, the old priests regained their power and life returned to normal. Were people worried that Tutankhamun might start to re-introduce his father-in-law`s ideas? The priests could have worked together with Ay and Horemheb to commit this crime. The reason for the murder can`t have been power because Ay was old. It must have been for what they thougth was the good of the country.

It is perhaps significant that many people who were involved in the discovery of the tomb og the young King met with an untimely death themselves. This may simply be coincidence or superstition, or it may have something to do with the fact that the tomb, once opened, gave off harmful gases which had been buried for thousands of years. There was even a suggestion that those who opened the tomb were cursed. This, however, is something that could never be proved!
