Vikings
People called Vikings lived in Sweden, Norway, Denmark about 1,200 year ago. Winter there were long and cold. Summers were short. Most Vikings lived on farm. Vikings had to work very hard to grow and store enough food for the winter.
Vikings both farned and hunter for their food. The Vikings grew crops such as barley, wheat, oats, and rye. They used these to make bread, porridge, and beer. They grew vegetable in small gardens. They kept the animals for meat, eggs, and milk. Vikings were also good hunter. They shot wild animals with bows ang arrows. They hunted seals with spears. They caught fish and sea birds.
Barley (lúa mạch): A valuable grain (cây lương thực), of the family of grasses, genus Hordeum, used for food, and for making malt (mạch nha), from which are prepared beer, ale, and whisky.
Wheat (lúa mì) : A cereal (ngũ cốc) grass (Triticum vulgare) and its grain, which furnishes (cung cấp) a white flour for bread, and, next to rice, is the grain most largely used by the human race.
Porridge (cháo yến mạch): A food made by boiling some farinaceous substance, or the meal of it, in water
Seal (hải cẩu): Seals inhabit (sông) seacoasts, and are found principally (Phần lớn) in the higher latitudes (vùng) of both hemispheres (bán cầu). There are numerous species, bearing such popular names as sea lion, sea leopard,
Spear (cái giáo, a lance): A long, pointed weapon, used in war and hunting, by thrusting or throwing; a weapon with a long shaft (tay cầm) and a sharp head or blade;
Vikings prepared a lot of their food for storage. Vikings dried their meat over a fire or in the sun. They also put salt in it. This kept it form spoiling, or going bad. They store piece of meat in barrels with made from seawater. In winter month, they ate this meat with bread bake on hot stone by the fire. This bread was made from store rye and oatcakes.
Vikings had to contantly work to survive. Women did all the household jobs. They also helped men on the farm. Children did not go to shool; they were needed to help with the work. However, Vikings also thought engjoy life was important. Vikings celebreated important events with large feasts for many guests. They ate, drank, and had sports contests. Some feasts lasted more than a week.
