William Somerset Maugham (1874-1965)
William Somerset Maugham was born in France in 1874.
Maugham had an unhappy childhood.
His parents both died when ha was still a boy.
Thereafter, he went to England to live in the cold, stern atmosphere of his uncle’s home.

This setting later appears in his novel Cake and Ale(1930)
He studied at English schools and at the university of Heidelberg.
Europe was the place where ha began writing.
His success didn’t come easily

His first novel: Liza of lambeth (1897), drew on his experiences of slums.
Other novels: The Painted veil(1925), Cake and Ale(1930), Christmas Holiday(1939), The Hour Before the Dawn(1920).
His last important novel: The Razor’s Edge(1944).

His satiric comedies: The circle(1921), our Betters(1923), His melodrama: East of Suez(1922), For Services Rendered(1923).
His also wrote an anti-war play, essay and two autobiographies.
Of Human Bondage(1915), his best-known disguised autobiography tells the story of a young medical students much like himself.

Among his famous stories are Rain and Ashenden in the collection of this Trembling of a Leaf(1921).
The Luncheon is a good example of Maugham’s techniques.
