2. Independence:
The colonial economy depended largely on foreign coins, barter, and commodity money. In 1690, the Massachusetts Bay Colony issued the first Colonial currency. Other colonies soon imitated.

3. Westward expansion:
After the Revolutionary War in 1781, the Continental Congress adopted the dollar as the unit for the national currency.

4. Civil War:
The Confederacy issued currency to millions of Southerners.

5. Industrial Revolution:
In 1862, Congress issued $150 million in Legal Tender notes, also known as United States notes. These new notes were used as legal tender for most public and private debts.

6. World Standard:
Federal Reserve notes are the sole currency issued today. U.S. currency is universally accepted and trusted.

There are certain types of American money that was no longer issued such as: $500, $1000, $5000, $10000, gold certificates, silver certificates.
DESCRIPTION OF MONEY

+ Watermark: visible from both sides when held up to a light
+ Security thread: positioned in a unique spot for each denomination
+ Color-shifting ink: looks copper when viewed straight on but green when viewed at an angle

“In God We Trust”: first used on the two-cent coin in 1864.

Regaining Damaged Money

Paper money that has been destroyed or partially destroyed may be regained at full face value. More seriously damaged notes—less than half of the original surface—must be sent to the Department of the Treasury for determining their value.
