The text
1. After helping their young son battle a rare genetic disorder, Karen and Adam Owen were used to spending days and weeks in hospitals and caring for a special needs child. When their son Gavin lost his battle to mitochrondrial disease at the age of four, the deeply religious couple mourned their loss but saw themselves as following God`s plan.
2. They still had their older daughter Madison who was healthy and loving, but they wanted to put the skills that they had developed through years of raising a disable child to good use. They started the adoption process, and unlike many people, they specifically requested that they be given children with disabilities.
3. Nearly a year after Gavin died, the family adopted Angela, a then-one-year-old who had a genetic disorder that prevented her from speaking as well as crippling cerebral palsy. When they first met Angela, she was living in a foster home about an hour from their Pennsylvania house, and Karen and Adam would take her to a mall in between the two homes during their time to bond with her.`I remember walking around the store with Angela in her stroller and Adam and I looking at each other wondering if she was ok,` Karen writes on her blog, ..`Angela got so constantly steamed up that it appeared as if she was having one long seizure ; it was so intense. It was hard to get a response from her, and if you did, it often involved some type of failing movements and she certainly didn`t look at you. Now, Angela is smiling, giggling, and beginning to communicate using an iPad- all the things that had been impossible when the Owens` began the adoption process.
4. They have made similar progress with their youngest child Jayden, a little boy who came into their lives when he had many broken bones after suffering Shaken Baby Syndrome.Karen told that one of their biggest achievements had been teaching Jayden themeaning of the constant and unconditional love of a mother and father, since that is not something he experienced having been raised in foster homes where the staff always came and went based on the shift schedule.
