Unit Twelve: WATER SPORTS
SPEAKING
Time: 45 minutes
OBJECTIVES:
Aim(s): By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
Talk about different types of water sports
Give opinions and preferences about water sports
Lexical items: Words / phrases related to water sports
Structures: sentences used to talk about sports
METHOD : Integrated, mainly communicative
TEACHING AIDS : textbook, pictures, chalk, board, LCD projector
PROCEDURE:

Lead-in:
T divides the class into 4 groups and gives instructions for the small game they are going to play:
Make a list of the water sports you know. After two minutes the group with the longest list will win the game.
Pre-speaking:
T raises some questions:
How many alternative sources of energy did you learn in the reading passage? What are they?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of each energy source?
T gives comments and introduces the speaking topic.
T explains some words in the tasks and shows Ss how to pronounce them correctly.
Vocabulary:
nuclearreactor (n) : lò phản ứng hạt nhân
radiation (n) : sự bức xạ, phóng xạ
ex: a low / high level of radiation (mức độ phóng xạ thấp / cao)
hydroelectricity (n) : thủy điện
run out (v) : hết, cạn kiệt
ex: My patience is running out (tôi không thể kiên nhẫn được nữa)
Our fuel ran out / We ran out of fuel
enormous (adj) = very large, huge, immense
renewable (adj) : có thể thay thế

Task 1. The following statements list some advantages and disadvantages of various sources of energy. Read and tick (() the appropriate box A (for the advantages) or D (for the disadvantages), then compare the results with a partner’s.

Task 2. Work in pairs. Talk with your friend about the advantages and disadvantages of using each alternative source of energy, using the suggestions from task 1.

A: I think / believe that wind power can be an alternative source of energy.
B: Why do you think / believe so?
A: Because our major sources of energy are running out while the wind is abundant and unlimited.
B: I know it is also clean and safe to the environment. However, it is not available when there is no wind.

T selects some pairs to act out the convesations in front of the class. T gives comments.
Post-speaking:
Task 3. Work in groups. Express your belief on the increasing use of alternative sources in the future, using the ideas from task 2.

T assigns homework.
Homework: Write down the conversations in task 3 in your notebook + prepare the listening section.
The representative of each group writes down all the water sports they know on a piece of paper .
Ss write down the words and repeat after T
Ss do task 1 in pairs .
