What did the man and the dog do in this extract? What do you learn from this story?

The man was too numb. He made two more fires, one under a tree which was put out because of snow falling from the branches of the trees; the other in the open air. He could not hold matches with his hand so he failed to do it. The man then intended to kill the dog in order to put his hands into the dog’s body but he couldn’t move. As the man slipped into death, it whined and sat facing him. Only when it smelt the death, it howled and then trotted up the trail to find another food-provider.
