LESSON 5: LANGUAGE FOCUS
1. Relative clause: (mệnh đề liên hệ)
* Relative pronoun: (đại từ liên hệ)
+ Who : thay cho danh từ hoặc đại từ chỉ người
làm chủ ngữ ở mệnh đề liên hệ.
a) She is the woman. She keeps this library.
She is the woman who keeps this library.
b) The students are from Japan. They are next to Mary.
The students who are next to Mary are from Japan.
+ Which: thay cho danh từ hoặc đại từ chỉ vật
làm chủ ngữ hoặc tân ngữ ở mệnh đề
liên hệ.
Example:
a) Tet is a festival. Tet occurs in late January or early February.
Tet is a festival which occurs in late January or early February.
b) The picture was beautiful. She was looking at it.
The picture which she was looking at was beautiful.
* Relative adverb: (trạng từ liên hệ)
* Relative pronoun: (đại từ liên hệ)
* who:
person as subject.
* whom:
person as object
* which:
thing as subject or object
* where:
place
* when:
time
* whose:
possession
* that:
for both who or which

3. Defining and non-defining relative clauses:
a) Defining relative clauses: (meänh ñeà lieân heä xaùc ñònh)
Defining relative clauses identify nouns, these clauses
tell us which person or thing the speaker means.
a) Non-defining relative clause: (meänh ñeà lieân heä khoâng xaùc ñònh)
Non-defining relative clauses give more information about a person or thing
already identified. When we write these clauses, we put commas at the
beginning of the clause (and often at the end of the clause).
The novel which you gave me on my birthday has been lost.
Viet Nam, which is in the Southeast Asia, exports rice
Note: * we cannot use “that” in a non-defining relative clause.
* In a non-defining relative clause we cannot leave out
who or which.
