Có hai loại mệnh đề quan hệ trong tiếng Anh
A. Defining relative clauses: mệnh đề quan hệ hạn định
Là mệnh đề mà xác định cho chúng ta những thông tin thiết yếu, quan trọng về danh từ mà nó dang thay thế. Chúng ta không thể bỏ đi mệnh đề này, nếu bỏ nó, câu trở nên tối nghĩa, thậm chí vô nghĩa.
Ví dụ: The man who is standing next to the Liberty statue is Mr. Comf. (nếu bỏ đi mệnh đề này thì câu trở nên vô nghĩa, người nghe không biết/ xác định được ai cả)
Loại mệnh đề quan hệ trên đây đã được luyện tập trong hoạt động 1. Nay trong hoạt động 2 ta sắp đề cập tới loại mệnh đề khác là:

B. Non-defining relative clauses: mệnh đề quan hệ không hạn định
Còn gọi là mệnh đề phụ, bổ trợ thêm thông tin trong câu đã xác định, nên thông tin này không cần thiết, có thể bỏ đi mà câu không thay đổi nghĩa. Dấu hiệu nhận biết dạng mệnh đề này là nằm sau một dấu phẩy hoặc trong hai dấu phẩy (commas)
This man, who is about 26 years-old now, is Mr. Comf.
Uncle Ho, who is called Ho Chi Minh, is the old and respected father of peoples.
Lưu ý: không bao giờ được bỏ đại từ quan hệ hay sử dụng đại từ That thay thế cho Who, Whom, Which trong mệnh đề không hạn định.
