Ask and answer the following questions
Ask and answer the questions
1. What was the life like in the author’s village many years ago?
2. Why did the villagers want to send their children to school and college in spite of their shortage?
3. How did the children help improve the lifestyle in the village when they finished college or technical high school?
4. What did an old farmer say about the effect of the knowledge the young brought home?
5. What exactly did he tell his grandchildren?
1. What was life like in the author’s village many years ago?
-> It was poor and simple
2. Why did the villagers want to send their children to school and college in spite of their shortage?
-> Because they hoped that with an education of science
and technology, their children could find
a better way of bettering their lives.
3. How did the children help improve the lifestyle in the village when they finished college or technical high school?
-> They introduced new farming methods which resulted
in bumper crops. They also helped grow cash crop.
4. What did an old farmer say about the effect of the knowledge the young brought home?

-> He said their lives had changed a lot thanks to
the knowledge their children had brought home
5. What exactly did he tell his grandchildren?
He told to his grandchildren: “Study harder so that you can do even more for the village than your parents!”
He told his grandchildren to study harder so that they could do even more for the village than their parents.

Work in pair : Discuss the following questions:
“What will you do in the future to help people in your home town?”

Use the dialogue as example:
A : Lam, what do you want to do in the future?
B: I want to become a doctor.
A: If you are a doctor, what can you do to help people in your home town?
B: I will cure their diseases and keep them healthy. What about you, Huong?
A: I want to be an architect. I will build a lot of flats for local people to live in.
and the cues below:
- Architect/ Build medical centre, school, new flats for local people
- Doctor/ Cure people’s health
- Teacher/ Teach the children
- Scientist/ Invent new modern technologies.
- ……
