B. GRAMMAR: ATICLES
1. INDEFINITE ARTICLE “A/ AN”
We use “A” before a consonant and “AN” before a vowel sound (U, E, O, A, I).
Ex: A visitor/ An exhibition
2. DEFINITE ARTICLE “THE”
We use “THE” when it is clear which one we mean. This can happen in three ways:
a. We use “THE” when we repeat the noun we’ve already mentioned.
Ex: A man and a women were sitting opposite me. The man was American but I think the woman was British.

b. We use “THE” when there is only one of something
Ex: The earth goes around the sun and the moon goes around the earth.
Paris is the capital of France.
c. We use “THE” before a specific noun. (A noun followed with a phrase or a clause)
Ex: The coffee that was just made is too strong.
The man sitting next to me on the plane felt nervous, because he’d never flown before.

C. READING COMPREHENSION: Read the passage carefully then choose the correct answer.
People used to know more or less how their children would live. Now things are changing so quickly that they don’t even know what their own lives will be like in a few years’ time. What follow is not science fiction. It is how experts see in the future.
You are daydreaming behind the steering wheel: is it too dangerous? No! That’s no problem because you have it on automatic pilot, and with its hi-tech computers and cameras, your car “know” how to get you home safe and sound.
What is for lunch? In the old days you used to stop off to buy a hamburger or a pizza. Now you use your diagnostic machine to find out which food your body needs. If your body needs more vegetables and less fat, your food-preparation machine make you a salad.
