You are going to persuade your friend to do the following
things to protect the environment. First, look at the idea
cues given.
2. speak
Use recycled paper to help save trees.
Try to avoid buying plastic. It`s hard to recycle.
Use less energy by switching off lights when rooms are not in use,
not wasting hot water, and not boiling more water than necessary.
Use a bicycle or walk instead of using a car for short trips.
Try to buy `environmentally-friendly` products.
Sort out your rubbish. Potato peelings, left-over food, tea leaves
etc. can be put in one bin, aluminum cans, glass bottles in one bin and paper, newspapers etc. in one bin.

Now, look at the useful expressions which may help
you to persuade your friend.
2. speak

Won’t you…?
It would be better if you…
Why don’t you…?
Why not…?
What/ How about…?

Look at the example below.
2. speak
A: I think it would be better if we use recycled paper in daily activities.
B: Why? How come?
A: Because if we use recycled paper, we can save trees. Less trees will be cut down for producing new more paper. That’s how we can save our environment.
B: That’s a good idea. Let’s do it.

The woman who lived in the tree
Julia Hill, an American woman, was born in 1974. She was 23 years old when she discovered that a company wanted to cut down part of a forest in California. In the forest there were a lot of redwood trees. One of the trees was 70 meters tall and 1,000 years old.
Julia wasn’t happy about this. She traveled to California and climbed up the tree. “If I sit in the tree,” she said, “the company can’t cut it down”. At the beginning, Julia planted to stay in the tree for two weeks. She lived in a small tree-house and her friends were very helpful – they cooked food for her everyday. She used her mobile phone to talk to her family and to news reporters. She stayed in the tree day and night.

Environmental organizations supported her, but other people weren’t on the side and they tried to stop her. The company used a helicopter that stayed near her tree-house for a long time. The helicopter was very noisy and there was a lot of wind. Julia didn’t like it, but she stayed in the tree.
In the end, she was successful. The company agreed not to cut down the redwood. Finally, after two years and eight days in the trees, Julia Hill climbed down and walked on the ground again. She and her friends were very happy.

The world’s oceans are so vast that they can cope with the present levels of pollution. However, little is known about the long-term effects of such slow poisoning. The most serious problem of modern time is that man is destroying the earth’s natural resources and transforming huge areas into wasteland. As a result, it is becoming extremely difficult to grow enough to feed the world’s rapidly increasing population. A way of protecting all the wildlife on the earth must also be found as many species are in danger of disappearing completely from the face of the earth. The danger, however, is not confined solely to the land and the sea. The smoke in the atmosphere, for example, is increasing so much that the amount of sunlight has been reduced in many cities. Man’s whole environment is being changed in a serious way.

Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to complain about the dirt and smoke which comes from your factory chimneys.
Two days ago I decided to do my washing. I washed the sheets and put them out to dry as it was a nice sunny day and there was a breeze. When I took the washing in, I was horrified to discover that it was covered with dirty marks. I assume that the breeze must have carried the dirt from your chimneys.
This is not only because of my sheets but also because we have two small children who are made to breathe the same air. Until this incident I thought your chimneys were safe and clean.
I have already written to our local Member of Parliament about this matter. Furthermore, I must warn you that I am going to write to the local newspaper tomorrow.
I look forward to receiving your reply.
Yours faithfully,
Ha Tran

These days, many people begin to throw their garbage into the lake behind your house. What makes you worried most is the garbage pollutes the water and produces such an annoying smell in your living area. You think that local authority should prohibit and fine heavily anyone dumping the garbage into the lake. You have decided to write a letter of complaint to the head of the local authority about this.
