1. Chức năng của các quan hệ từ:
WHO: thay thế cho danh từ chỉ người (làm chủ ngữ )
WHOM : thay thế cho danh từ chỉ người (làm tân ngữ)
WHICH : thay thế cho danh từ chỉ vật (làm chủ ngữ hoặc tân ngữ), dùng như một “connector” thay thế cho cả mệnh đề trước.
WHOSE: thay thế cho một hình thức sở hữu
WHERE : thay cho cụm giới từ chỉ nơi chốn = on / in / at + WHICH
WHEN: thay thế cho cụm từ chị thời gian = on / in / at + WHICH
WHY: chỉ lý do = for WHICH
THAT = WHO / WHOM / WHICH ở mệnh đề giới hạn
2. Vị trí của các quan hệ từ:
+ Đứng sau từ mà nó thay thế
+ Đứng đầu mệnh đề quan hệ
3. Whoever (bất cứ ai), wherever (bất cứ nơi nào), whenever (bất cứ khi nào), whatever (bất cứ cái gì): được xem như là đại từ.
