WHAT IS ASEAN ?
ASEAN stands for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations that today consists of 10 Southeast Asian states.
The bloc’s motto is: “One Vision, One Identity. One Community”.
ASEAN was formed on August 8th in Bangkok, Thailand by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philipines, Singapore and Thailand
1967
Brunei Darussalam became the sixth member, right after its independence.
1984
Viet Nam became the seventh member.
1995
Laos and Myanmar joined the bloc.
Cambodia joined two years later ( 1999)
1997
KEEP IN MIND!
The aim was to improve economic, political and social cooperation.
Another objective was to balanced political conflicts between these countries that existed as a conquence of decolonization and post-colonial state-building.
During Cold War, ASEAN members wanted to contain influence of communism in their region
TIME CHANGED
The collapse of the USSR, the founding of the WTO and a financial crisis in Asia prompted members to deepen their relations and adapt to the new situation.
2000s
Free trade agreements were concluded with India, China, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
In the future, the entire region will be merged into one large free trade zone.
2001s
 The “Asian summit” takes place annually. It is a meeting of the heads of state and government, where current problem are discussed and solutions are worked out.
Today ASEAN is based on three pillars
Political - Security
Economic
Socio - Cultural
CHALLENGES
ASEAN faces a number of challenges, especially in a relation to social and environmental justice.
Countries such as Viet Nam or the Philipines are particularly vulnerable to climate change and already feel its impacts today.
Now already over 50 years old, few people actually know about ASEAN. The bloc holds an important role regionally and beyond when it comes to major political and economic developments. However Asian doesn’t live up to this role yet. Specific actions are missing, for example in the fight against environment crisis. People in Southeast Asia are still waiting for social and ecological justice.
