The formal school education system in England consists of two levels of education: primary education, secondary education. The children begin primary education when they are 5 years old. They finish primary education at the age of 10. The English children go to the secondary school to study Grade 5 when they reach 11 years old. Secondary education lasts 5 years. They will complete 11- year- compulsory education when they finish Grade 11 at the age of 16. Then they have to take the national examination for GCSE in late July. The academic year in England runs from September to July and is divided into three terms. Autumn term is from the beginning of September to mid-December. Spring term is from the beginning of January to mid- March and Summer term from early April to mid-July.
