UNIT 4: SCHOOL EDUCATION SYSTEM
READING
I. Objectives:
1. General knowledge: Students know the school education system in England.
2. Language: Students learn words, sentences and expression for describing school education system
3. Skills: Students can guess meaning of the context, scan for specific information and passage comprehension
II. Teaching aids: pictures, text book.
III. Procedures:

Students’ activities
1. Warm – up :
Show some pictures
( Can you guess what the lesson about today?
Yeah, today we will learn about the school education system.
2. Pre-reading:
Ask students “Now students…
-How old were you when you started Grade 1
-How many years do you have to study in the school?
- When does the school year often begin and end?
(Lead to the lesson: “Alright, that is the school education system in Vietnam; Do you think the school education system in the other countries is the same with ours? Now we will study about School education system in England to compare with one in Vietnam”.
3. While reading:
- Ask students to look through the passage and read in silence
- Explain pronunciation and meaning of new words in the passage:
Compulsory (adj): must do
State school system: trường công lập
Independent school system = Public school system: trường dân lập.
Primary school: the school for students from 5 to 10
Secondary school: the school for students from 11 to 16
Curriculum: teaching program.
GCSE: (General Certificate of Secondary): the degree you get after finishing the secondary school; It’s like your graduation degree after you finish grade 12.
Task 1 : (3 minutes) Find words or phrases in the reading passage which have the following meanings.
- Let students work in pair and do task 1
- Help students if necessary
- Call each student to read the answer loudly and correct answers.

Task 2: (4 minutes)Answer the questions
- Let students work in pair
- Ask students look through and try to remember the information in the passage, then try answering the questions in their words.
- Walk round the classroom and help students if necessary
- Call pairs of students to stand up to ask and answer the questions.
- Correct the answers

4. Post - reading:
- Let students work in group and tell the others which subjects they find the most difficult and their expectation to receive help from the teacher and their friends to study more effectively.
- Go round the class and help students with the vocabulary and structure.
- Call one group to present their ideas in front of class.
- Listen the students and give them some comments
(If the students find out English is difficult, give them some advices:
Learn by heart all vocabulary in the lesson and try to use them to make sentences.
Do much exercises;
Ask teacher everything you don’t know, don’t miss them;
Try talking to the foreigner everywhere.
( The key to study English well is working hard)
5. Homework:
- Learn by heart new words.
- Summarize the passage.
- Find out the same and the different things between the Vietnamese school education system and in England.
