WARM-UP: (2’)
Sound games:
- Asking students to read these words aloud and sort them into sound columns /ɔ/ or /ɔ:/
Atom – form
Joy – award
Parrot – torch
Boss - laundry
Top - oral
PRONUNCIATION (8’)
Presentation:
Presenting the two sounds /ɔ/ and /ɔ:/
+ /ɔ/:First pronounce the sound /æ/ then put your tongue slightly back & bring your lips slightly forward. It is a short sound
+ /ɔ:/:First practice the sound then put the back of your tongue up a little. It is a long sound
Practice the two sounds:
- Playing the tape, asking students to repeat words and sentences after the tape.
- Asking students to practice words and sentences in pairs.
Listen & Repeat
/ɔ/: Top -boss -doctor -wrong -job -box
/ɔ:/: call –sport four walking more talk
Practice these sentences
Put the socks on top of the box.
He lost his job as a doctor in the hospital.
What’s wrong with you, boss ?
Is walking called a sport ?
He can’t talk to her any more.
Four of us have walked for fourteen miles
EXERCISE 1: (10’)
Presentation:
- Presenting the example
Ex: The young have the future in their hands.
The young = young people
- Explaining the function of the + adj
→ indicates group of people
→ verbs used in the plural form
Practice 1:
- Asking students to read all the adjectives raised in Exercise 1
- Asking students to do exercise 1 in pairs
- Asking some students to read the sentences aloud
- Giving feedback
Exercise 1 : Complete these sentences using the + one of the adjectives ; injured -poor sick -unemployed -young
Ex :The young have the future in their hands.
Ambulances arrived at the scene of the accident and took………………….to hospital .
Life is all right if you have a job, but things are not so easy for………………………. .
Julia has been a nurse all her life. She has spent her life caring for……………………. .
In England there is an old story about a man called Robin Hood. It is said that he robbed……………… and gave the money to……………. .

EXERCISE 2: (10’)
Presentation:
- Presenting the example
Ex: She used to cry for candies, but now she doesn’t
- Explaining the function of Used to + infinitive
→ describes a state or a habit in the past (it is not true now)
→ used to has no present form. To describe present states or habits, we use the Present Simple Tense.
- Raising the difference between used to and the Past Simple Tense
→ Past Simple is used to describe individual past action, or past actions which were not habits.
Practice 2:
- Asking students to practice in groups, completing the sentences with used to and a suitable word.
- Asking some students to read their sentences aloud
- Giving feedback
Exercise 2 : : Complete these sentences with used to ….. + a suitable verb.
Ex : Dennis gave up smoking two years ago. He used to smoke 40 cigarettes a day.
Liz a motorbike, but last year she sold it and bought a car.
We came to live in Manchester a few years a ago. We in Nottingham.
I rarely eat ice-cream now, but I it when I was a child.
Jim my best friend, but we aren’t friend any longer .
It only takes me about 40 minutes to get to work since the new road was opened . It more than an hour .
There a hotel opposite the station , but it closed a long time ago.

- Asking students to practice in groups, join a sentence from A with one from B to make a new sentence, using which
- Asking a student in each group to read their sentences aloud.
