Exercise 5: In what order do you think the five sentences below should be put according to the reading passage ? (number them from 1 to 5).


- It is the written English, which is not systematically phonetic, that causes difficulties to foreigners.
- As a mother tongue, English ranks second only to Chinese, which is little used outside China.
- It is the English language that is used as the language of aviation, international sport and pop music.
- In the world today, there are 5,000 to 6,000 living languages, of which English is by far the most widely used.
