Ex: We had lived in Hanoi before 1980.

Hành động đã xảy ra và kéo dài đến một thời điểm nào đó trong quá khứ.
Ex: By the time he met her, he had worked in that company for four years.
Lưu ý: Hai hành động xảy ra trong quá khứ, hành động xảy ra trước chia thì quá khứ hoàn thành, hành động xảy ra sau chia thì quá khứ đơn
Recognized words: when, as, as soon as, before, after, by the time

While George was reading in bed, two thieves
had climbed into his kitchen. When they had entered the house, they went into the dinning room. It was very dark, so they had turned on the torch. Suddenly, they heard a voice behind them.
“What’s up? What’s up?” a voice had called out. Then thieves drop the torch and ran away as quickly as they could.

George had heard a noise and came downstairs quickly. He turned on the light but he couldn’t see anybody. The thieves
