Lesson 1: GETTING STARTED
A HELPING HAND
A. Objectives:
- To introduce some new words relating to community service and volunteer work
- To review the simple past and present perfect tense
- To help student talk volunteer work .
B. Language Knowledge:
a- Vocabulary: community , benefit, volunteer, donate, non-profit organization, make a difference
b- Structures: Tenses – the past simple : S+ V2/ V-ed + O
- The present perfect : S+ have / has + p.p + O
C. Teaching aids: pictures, cassette, tape/ CD
D. Skills: Practice four skills: Reading and Listening , Speaking, Writing Skills
E. Procedures:
1.Stabilization: Greeting and checking attendance
2.Checking up: Corrects the fifteen minute test
Teaching steps
I. Lead-in :
- Shows the pictures : What do these people do ?
- Leads to the new lesson
II. New lesson:
1 .Activity 1 - Vocabulary:
- Teaches vocabulary:
+ community (n) : (synonym) :cộng đồng
+ benefit (n) : (synonym) : lợi ích
+ volunteer (n ) , (v) ( explain) : đi tình nguyện , tình nguyện viên
+ non-profit organization ( n ) ( explain): tổ chức phi lợi nhuận
+ donate (v) : example : hiến tặng , đóng góp
Ex: We should donate our old books and clothes for poor children
* Checking understanding of new words, using “slap the board”.
b- Structures:
- Reviews the past simple and present prefect tense
Ex: Last year we provided evening classes for street children
We have asked people to donate books and clothes for them
2 .Activity 2. Listen and read:
- Asks student to listen to the tap and read.
- Calls 3 students to read, helps them correct their pronunciation.
- Asks sts to recall information from the listening

* Keys :
a. Community service: It’s the work you do for the benefits of the community
b. Be a Buddy : an organiozation that helps street children
c. Go Green : a non=profit organization that protects the environment
a. Read the conversation again and tick True or False
- Asks sts to work individually then compare the answers with a partner and then discuss as a class
- Goes through each statements and asks sts how the text in the dislogue supports their answer.

b. Read the conversation again. Asnwer the questions
- Has sts look at the phrase “ make a difference “ is located in the conversation then guess the meaning
* Key: make a difference means doing sthing good, especially to improve a situation
- Asks sts to think of a community garden in their neighborhood .
- Has them dissuss the questions in pairs
3.Activity 3 Look at the words in the box . can you put them in the right groups?
- Lets sts do the task in groups .
- Writes the correct answer on the board
