What it means to be independent
A father tells his son:
Don’t ever let someone tell you that you can’t do something. Not even me. You got a dream, you gotta protect it. When people can’t do something themselves, they’re gonna tell you that you can’t do it. You want something, go get it.
Note: gotta = have got to
gonna = going to
Read the following extract and discuss
1. What kind of person does the father want his son to grow up to be?

2. What does the father mean by saying “You got a dream, you gotta protect it” and “You want something, go get it”?
Work in pairs. Discuss the extract and prepare a short talk expressing your opinion about it. You can use the following questions to guide you.
1. What kind of person does the father want his son to grow up to be?
The father wants his son to grow up to be confident, self-reliant, determined, independent …
2. What does the father mean by saying “You got a dream, you gotta protect it” and “You want something, go get it”?
“You want something, go get it” means that we have to nurture our dreams and we are determined to do our best to achieve our goals.
“You got a dream, you gotta protect it” means everyone has dreams, so when we have dreams, we have to try our best to make the dreams become realistic.
