Warm up: Discribing pictures
- Introduces the topic: What it means to be independent
1. What is your dream?
2. How do you protect your dream and make sure it will come true one day?
A father tells his son:
Don’t ever let someone tell you that you can’t do something. Not even me. You got a dream, you gotta protect it. When people can’t do something themselves, they’re gonna tell you that you can’t do it. You want something, go get it.
Explain some contracted words
gotta = have got to
gonna = going to

The father wants his son to grow up to be confident, self-reliant, determined, independent …
2. What does the father mean by saying “You got a dream, you gotta protect it” and “You want something, go get it”?
“You want something, go get it” means that we have to nurture our dreams and we are determined to do our best to achieve our goals.
“You got a dream, you gotta protect it” means everyone has dreams, so when we have dreams, we have to try our best to make the dreams become realistic.

1. American parents’ most important task is to teach their children to live independently, while Vietnamese parents think their most important role is to protect their children and provide them with a happy and wealthy childhood.
2. Parents always show respect for their children and let them voice their opinions on issues, whereas Vietnamese parents rarely ask for their children’s opinions before making family choices.
3. When American children finish school, most of them will move out of the family home and start a truly independent life, whereas Many Vietnamese parents want their children to live with them in the same roof.
4. Being different from most Vietnamese children, most American children get their own rooms from an early age.
