My name`s Ruth and I`m from a small village in England. I live quite near Nottingham and I`ve lived there for most of my life actually. Nottingham is quite famous for Sherwood forest, where Robin hood was supposed to live and as a child I spent some of my time in Sherwood Forest playing. I live in a village and it`s actually a mining village with about 1,000 or 1,500 inhabitants. There`s really not very much to do there. There`s a shop and a post office, a school and my mom teaches at the school. I did actually live in Edinburgh for one year and that was quite different from life in my village because there was so much more to do and there were so many more people and there was so much more traffic, but I think actually I prefer living in a village because, well, if you want to go out to the shops, if you want to go to the cinema, you can go to the nearest town, or to the nearest city, but you can always escape city life and you can always go back to where it`s quiet and more peaceful and where everybody knows each other, but if you live in the city you can`t really escape it, and I don`t really like the noise of the city so I think I will probably live in a village for the rest of my life.

The tiny village of Frindley is said to posses a “cursed tree”. Because
the tree was mentioned in a newspaper, the number of visitors to
Frindley has now increased. The tree was planted near a church fifty
year ago, but it is only in recent years that it has gained an evil
reputation. It is said that if anyone touches the tree, he will have bad
luck; if he picks a leaf, he will die. Many villagers believe that the tree
has already claimed a number of victims. The vicar has been asked to
have the tree cut down, but so far he has refused. He has pointed out
that the tree is a useful source of income as tourists have come from all
parts of the country to see it. In spite of all that has been said, the
tourists have picked leaves and cut their names on the tree-trunk. So
far, none of them has been truck down by sudden death!

Here are a sample passage about a weekend at the
seaside. Now, read the sample.
Last Sunday was a beautiful day, and my brother, my sister and I were up
early, impatient to go to the beach. It was 10.30 when we got to the outskirts
of the city. The road to the beach (which was ten miles away) was full of
cars. It took us two hours to get there.
When we arrived, we could hardly see the sand or find a place to spread our
towels. There were thousands of people there, lying on the sand under
brightly colored umbrellas, or standing on the edge of the water, or bathing
in the sea. Boys and girls were trying to play games, but there was no space
because of all the people lying down. There were ice-cream sellers and
drink-sellers wandering in and out between the bodies, and I could not hear
the sound of the sea because of the shouts and screams and the noise of
hundreds of radios playing different kinds of music.

Here are a sample passage about a weekend at the
seaside. Now, read the sample.
The only way to escape was to run into the sea and swim out for twenty or
thirty meters beyond all the little children and their parents in the shallow
water. At last, I could lie on my back in the water, feel the sun on my face,
and be away from the noise. At about three o`clock, everyone had lunch,
and my mother wouldn`t let us go back into the water again till six. I wanted
to stay there all evening, but my father wanted to go home at seven
because he wanted to see the football match on TV. Every other father
obviously had the same idea. When we started our journey home, there
were already hundreds of cars on the road. Again, it took us two hours to
drive the ten miles home, and my father missed most of the football match.
When I am grown-up, I will have my own car and I will always go to the
beach on weekdays.
