Part A: READING
Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam is a famous historical and cultural site in Hanoi. Originally built in 1070 in the Ly dynasty, Van Mieu was representative of Confucian ways of thought and behaviour. Six years later, Quoc Tu Giam, the first university of Vietnam, was established on the grounds of Van Mieu. Between 1076 and 1779, Quoc Tu Giam educated thousands of talented men for the country. In 1482, Van Mieu became a place to memorialize the most brilliant scholars of the nation. The names, places of birth and achievements of top students in royal examination were engraved on stone stelae.
These stelae, carried on the backs of giant tortoises, are still standing today and they attract great interest from visitors.
After more than 900 years of existences, Van Mieu is an example of well-preserved traditional Vietnamese architecture. The banyan trees in Van Mieu , which witnessed festivals and examinations during feudal times, continue to flourish. Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam is a site of national pride for Vietnamese people.

GROUP PRESENTATION
There are many historical places in Quang Tri Province. Quang Tri Citadel is one of them. It is in the central of Quang Tri town and built in 1824 during the 4th year of the reign of Minh Mang. The citadel is about 60km north of Hue. The citadel had a style of Vauban architecture with its circuit of 2,160m – one door each side. There were four fortresses controlling the four citadel gates. Inside was the town palace surrounded by a system of thick walls. The town palace was a house with three rooms whose two wings were used as places for the King to worship.
General Introduction
THE INCIDENT OF 81 DAYS AND NIGHTS
Quang Tri Citadel is well known all over the world for the incident of 81 days and nights in the hot summer in 1972. By using fire-power, the South Vietnam uppet troop was determined to re-occupy Quang Tri Citadel within a couple of days. Quang Tri Town, therefore, had to suffer from the U.S bombardment and shelling of 140 B52 aircraft in turn. Quang Tri Tow had to put up with the destruction of bombs and shells equivalent to 7 atomic bombs dropping onto Hiroshima and Nagasaki – Japan in 1945. It is, really, unbelievable that each inhabitant in this land had to suffer 7 tons of bombs averagely. All people tried their best to fight till their last breath.
The citadel has gone as a glorious period in history of the nation’s war against foreign invasion. We are all proud of it, and foreigners admire it. A monument was set up in the centre of the citadel as a symbol of the indomitable spirit of the Quang Tri people and army and also memorizes the sacrifices of the fallen soldiers for the independence and freedom of the nation.
QUANG TRI CITADEL
Due to the destruction of natural disasters and severe weather, this place was partly destroyed and restored many times and now it is in a good condition deserving a place to educate patriotism for the young.
