WHAT WE HAVE TO DO…..
UNIT 15 - LANGUAGE FOCUS
a. PRONUNCIATION
Listen and repeat.
Practise reading aloud this dialogue.
A: Florence, Mr. Barnes went out on the tenth of last month.
B: Oh. I have warned you, haven’t I ? Did he pay the rent?
A: Only to the seventh.
B: Only to the seventh?
A: Yes, and we may have no chance to see him again. Is he your
friend?
B: No, Mr. Barnes is not my friend and if he phones, remind him that
he must pay the rent to the end of the month.
A: Don’t be so tense. We’ll have a new tenant on the thirteenth of this
month.
UNIT 15 - LANGUAGE FOCUS
B. GRAMMAR & VOCABULARY
Exercise 1. Complete the sentences, using could, couldn’t or was/were (not) able to
Examples:
− My grandfather was a very clever man. He could speak five languages.
− I looked everywhere for the book but I couldn’t find it.
− They didn’t want to come with us at first but we were
able to persuade them.
When must WAS/WERE ABLE TO be used instead of COULD?
In the positive, when it is implied that PEOPLE MANAGED TO DO SOMETHING IN A DIFFICULT SITUATION.
In the negative, COULDN’T and WASN’T/WEREN’T can be used.
1. Laura had hurt her leg and _______________________walk very well.
2. Sue wasn`t at home when I phoned but I _____________contact
her at her office.
3. I looked very carefully and I ________________________ see a figure
in the distance.
4. I wanted to buy some tomatoes. The first shop I went to didn`t have
any but I _____________get some in the next shop.
5. My grandmother loved music. She ___________________ play the
piano very well.
6. I had forgotten to bring my camera so I _________________________ take any photographs.
couldn’t /wasn’t able to

couldn’t / wasn’t able to
Exercise 2. Read the situation and write a sentence with a tag question.
In each situation, you are asking your friend to agree with you.
Example:
You look out of the window. The sky is blue and the sun is shining. What do you say to your friend?
(beautiful day)
It’s a beautiful day, isn’t it? “isn’t it” is a tag question.
- How is a tag question formed?
- A tag question follows a statement in positive or
negative form, separated by a comma.
TAG QUESTIONS
1. Words with a negative meaning are: NEVER, RARELY, HARDLY, LITTLE,…
2. Subject Pronouns (HE, SHE, IT, THEY…) are always used in tag questions.
3. Contracted negative forms (aren’t, don’t, won’t…) are used in tag questions.
Tag questions are short questions which appear at the end of a sentence.
They are used to confirm information or when we want to keep the flow of a conversation.
If the tag question has a rising intonation, then it is a real question. Otherwise, if said with falling intonation, it sounds more like a statement for which no answer is actually required.
