1. Presentation:
A phrasal verb is a verb plus one or two particles which create(s) a meaning different from the original verb.
Example:
- I ran into my teacher at the movies last night.
run + into = meet
- We don’t get on with our neighbours
(have a good relationship with)
2. What is a phrasal verb?
PHRASAL
VERBS
Intransitive
Transitive
Verbs + Particle + Object
(inseparable Phr. Verbs)
3. TYPES OF PHRASAL VERBS
b. Transitive phrasal verbs (có tân ngữ – danh từ hoặc đại từ)
+ Inseparable transitive phrasal verbs (Phrasal verbs không thể tách ra – Object luôn ở sau particle)
Example: We are looking for my key (Wrong: We are looking my key for)
We don’t get on with our neighbours
a. Intransitive phrasal verbs (không có tân ngữ)
Example: The plane will take off at 15:00
+ Separable transitive phrasal verbs (Phrasal verbs có thể tách ra)
Phrasal verbs thường có thể tách được khi particles là: on, off, up, down, in, out, away
* Nếu Object là một đại từ (me, us, it, them, you, him, her…),
thì nó luôn được đặt ở giữa phrasal verbs.
Example: Please turn it off. (Wrong: Please turn off it)
* Nếu Object là danh từ, nó có thể đặt ở sau hay giữa phrasal verbs
Example: Remember to turn off the lights when going out.
Remember to turn the lights off when going out.

Cũng giống như những động từ đơn khác, có nhiều phrasal verbs có thể là transitive hoặc intransitive.  Ngữ cảnh sẽ cho chúng ta biết chức năng cùng với nghĩa  của chúng:

- The plane took off at seven o’clock.
- He took off his hat and bowed politely as the teacher passed
