Topic: Films and cinema
Period 1: Teaching vocabulary
I. Class description: 25 foreign language non- specialized students at intermediate level.
II. Time: 45 minutes
III. Objectives
By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to:
Present new vocabulary items: kinds of film (Horror film, Cartoon, Action film, Romantic film, etc).
Use attitudinal adjectives to describe films or to express their opinions about particular films.
Develop speaking skills.
Develop writing skills.
IV. Anticipated problems
Students may not have sufficient vocabulary to talk about the topic. So T should be ready to help them.

WARM- UP
Matching
- T asks Ss to work in groups of four or five and match the titles of the films in column A with their Vietnamese translations in column B.

- T gives correct answers, and shows some pictures to help Ss have a common view about the films.

VOCABULARY
Vocabulary pre- teach
T asks Ss some questions about topic “Films and cinema”:
1. Do you like watching films? Do you want to see a film at the cinema or on TV? Why?
2. Can you name some kinds of films do you like to see?
3. What kinds of films do you like to see? Why?
Net work
- T writes a network of the word “film” on the board.
- T asks Ss to list some kinds of films they know.

- T helps Ss understand more about each kind of film by providing the meaning and pronunciation of them.
- T uses some ways to teach vocabulary efficiently.
1. Cartoon /kɑ:`tu:n/
- First, T writes the spelling and reads the word loudly, then asks Ss repeat to make sure that they can pronoun it exactly.
- T shows some pictures about cartoon such as Tom and Jerry…,


Then asks Ss “Do you know this film?” This is a cartoon film. So, “cartoon”, what does this mean?
- T provides more information to help Ss understand about this word. (Cartoon is a film made using characters and images which are drawn rather than real, and which is usually funny).
2. Comedy /`kɔmidi/
- First, T writes the spelling and reads the word loudly, then asks Ss repeat to make sure that they can pronoun it exactly.
- T gives the definition of this word (A film that makes you laugh is a……….), and explains more (it is an antonym of “tragedy”).
3. Horror film /`hɔrə/
- First, T writes the spelling and reads the word loudly, then asks Ss repeat to make sure that they can pronoun it exactly.
- T shows a video about a horror film (Ex: The host), and asks Ss “Are you frightened?” This is a horror film. So, “horror” what does this mean?
4. Action film /`ækʃn/
- T shows some pictures about some famous action films (Ex: Star Wars, Independence Day …)
