Lesson 5: LANGUAGE FOCUS

I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to:
+ Pronounce the consonant clusters / pt – pd – ps – bz / correctly
+ Practise using cleft sentences to focus on the subject, object or adverbial of the sentences
II. Methods:

Textbooks, handouts
IV. Procedure:

Warm – up : 5mins
- T. asks sts to list out all the words related to the topic of the unit 13.
Whole class
Pronunciation : 10mins
* Listen and repeat:
- Play the tape for Ss to hear the final sounds
- Have Ss read the words. Listen and give feedback
- Odd one out: Give Ss handouts and ask them to cross the underlined sounds different from the other ones:
1. a. dropped
b. bumped
c. hoped
d. robbed
2. a. stepped
b. nabbed
c. grabbed
d. stabbed
3. a. keeps
b. cups
c. cabs
d. caps
4. a. labs
b. laps
c. robes

- Check and give feedback
* Practise reading aloud:
- Play the CD for Ss to listen

Cleft sentences
* Presentation 1: Subject focus
E.g.:
My brother bought a new car last Sunday.
2. The train leaves the station at 5.00 o’clock.
- Analyze the sentence elements, then rewrite the sentences emphasizing on their subjects
It was my brother who bought a new car last Sunday.
It is the train that leaves ...
( It is/ was + S + who/ that ….
* Practice 1:
Exercise 1:
- Instruct Ss to do the exercise: Rewrite the sentences, focusing on the subject of the sentence
- Read the example and explain
- Ask Ss to do Ex.1 individually
- Go round and offer help when necessary
- Have some Ss read their sentences. Listen and give feedback
1. It was the boy who …
2. It was my mother who…
3. It was Huong and Sandra who sang…
4. It was Nam’s father who.
5. It was the boys who …
6. It was the girl who…
7. It was his presence at the meeting that…
* Presentation 2: Object focus
- Ask Ss to rewrite the sentences focusing on the object, instead of the subject.
- Check and give feedback:

- Ask Ss to do Ex.2 individually
- Go round and offer help when necessary

* Presentation 3: Adverbial focus
- Ask Ss to rewrite the sentences focusing on the adverbial
- Check and give feedback
* Practice 3:

- Get Ss to rewrite the first three sentences; the other ones do at home
- Ask Ss to do Ex.3 individually
- Go round and offer help when necessary
- Have some Ss read their sentences. Listen and give feedback:
