Grammar
To + infinitive:
Eg: What do you listen to classical music for? (to feel relaxed)
 To feel relaxed, I listen to classical music.
I listen to classical music to feel relaxed.
Form: What ….for?

Meaning: to express the purpose of doing something.
Usage: we use “to + infinitive” to answer for the question “What ….for?”.
To + infinitive
Two other ways of expressing the purpose:


Eg: What do you listen to classical music for?
 In order to feel relaxed, I listen to classical music.
I listen to classical music in order to feel relaxed.




Eg: What do you listen to classical music for?
 So as to feel relaxed, I listen to classical music.
I listen to classical music so as to feel relaxed.
In order to + infinitive
So as to + infinitive
Exercise 1. Use the words in brackets to answer the questions.
What did you phone her for? (good news)
What are you saving money for? (a cassette player)
What does she practise singing all day for? (the singing contest)
What are you learning French for? (French songs)
What does the monitor always go to class on time for? (a good example for the class)
1. What did you phone her for? (good news)
I phoned her to tell her a good news.

2. What are you saving money for? (a cassette player)
I am saving to buy a cassette player.

3. What does she practise singing all day for? (the singing contest)
 She practises singing all day to take part in the singing contest.
4. What are you learning French for? (French songs)
I am learning French to sing French songs.

5. What does the monitor always go to class on time for? (a good example for the class)
 The monitor always goes to class on time to make a good example for the class.
Wh-questions:
Eg: Susan went to the cinema yesterday.

 1. Who went to the cinema yesterday?
2. What did Susan do yesterday?
3. Where did Susan go yesterday?
4. When did Susan go to the cinema?

 We use “Wh-questions” to find out more information about topics. They are as follows: when, where, who, why, How, what, which, …….
The way of making a question:
To ask about the “subject”:



To ask about the “predicate”:
Wh + verb + …..?
Wh + Aux.V + S + main V + …..?
Exercise 3. Ask questions for the underlined words/ phrases in the following sentences.
Example:
I often listen to music whenever I have free time.
 When do you listen to music?
1. If it rains, I’ll stay at home and watch TV.
2. My father enjoys listening to classical music.
3. He left for Ho Chi Minh City last weekend.
4. James wants to talk to you.
5. We spend the evening playing chess last night.

Each team, one by one, will choose a number (1 – 9).
For each number you have to make a sentence with “to + infinitive” or a question with “Wh-questions”.
