What would you do
if you were a King or a Queen?
Last night, Mary watched TV late.
She overslept this morning.
If Mary hadn’t watched TV late last night, she wouldn’t have overslept.
Because Mary overslept,
she missed the school bus.
If Mary hadn`t overslept,
she wouldn’t have missed the school bus.
Mary missed the school bus,
so she came to class late.
If Mary hadn’t missed the school bus,
she wouldn’t have come to class late.
She didn’t study hard. She failed the exam.
If she had studied hard, she could have passed the exam.
She didn’t have good friends. She wasn’t very happy.
If she had had good friends, she would have been very happy.
He drove carelessly. He had a serious accident.
If he hadn’t driven carelessly, he wouldn’t have had a serious accident.
Structure
If she had studied hard, she would have passed the exam.
If + S + had V3, S +would +have V3.
If clause main clause
If + S1 + had(not) + V3, S2 would/could (not) have V3.
Usage:
We use conditional type 3 to express unreal conditions in the past.
Ex: My parents punished me because I went out late last night.
My parents wouldn’t have punished me if I hadn’t gone out late last night.
