Activity 1: Talking about reading habits

PRESENTATION: Teacher to the whole class (5 mins)

Ask questions relating to reading habits and elicit answers from the whole class.
Draw students’ attention to the vocabularies and structures that they can use to talk about kinds of books, time, and ways of reading books.
What do you usually read?
Newspapers
Magazines
Books
Picture stories, etc.
What kind of books do you usually read?
Short stories
Science fiction
Romance, etc.
When do you usually read books?
I read books during
the break at school?
I read books at home, when I have free time.
I read books before I go to bed
I often read books while waiting for the bus
How do you often read books?
I often read through the books quickly first.
Then I start reading it again, and this time very slowly to enjoy every detail of it.
Activity 1: Talking about reading habits
PRACTICE: (Task 1, p.122) (7 mins)
Students work in pairs, complete the conversation and practise reading it with their peers.
Teacher calls some pairs to stand up and read aloud the conversation.
Teacher helps students with pronunciation mistakes if necessary.

Work in pairs: ask your friend about his/ her reading habit. Use the questions above to help you (5 mins)
Report to the class (5 mins)
PRODUCTION: Task 2, p.122 (10 mins)
Activity 2: Talking about a book that you are reading or you have read
PRESENTATION: (7 mins)
Ask students questions:
What are you reading at the moment?
Who is the main character?
What is he/ she like?
Write the questions and students’ answers on the board?
Provide students with new words and structure if necessary (relative clause (whose parents are dead/ who is trained to be a wizard, etc.) and adjectives to describe qualities/ characteristics)
Activity 2: Talking about a book that you are reading or you have read
PRACTICE: (Task 3, p.122) (5 mins)
Students work in pairs to complete the conversation and practise reading it.
Teacher calls some students to stand up and read aloud the conversation
Teacher corrects students’ pronunciation mistakes if necessary
Activity 2: Talking about a book that you are reading or you have read
PRODUCTION (10 mins):
Task 4, p.122 (5 mins): Work in pairs, ask and answer about the book that you are reading or you have read. Note down the answers.
Task 5, p.122 (5 mins): Report the results to the whole class.
Sample answer
At the moment, I’m reading “The Chamber of Secrets”, one of Harry Potter books. The main character of the book is Harry Potter, whose parents are dead and who is trained to be a wizard in a wizard school. He is brave, witty and very kind to other people
