Black Rhinoceros
The African black rhinoceros is one of five species of this large animal. The black rhinoceros, white rhinoceros, and Sumatran rhinoceros have two horns, while the Indian and Javan rhinoceroses have only one horn. All five species are herbivorous, feeding on a variety of plants. The rhinoceros has notoriously poor eyesight, but makes up for this deficiency with an acute sense of smell.
White Rhino and Calf
A female white rhinoceros keeps a wary eye open while she and her calf drink at a water hole in South Africa. About 90 percent of white rhinoceroses are found in South Africa, where their numbers are slowly beginning to rise after dwindling dramatically over the last 30 years.
Indian Rhinoceros
The rare Indian rhinoceros is the largest of the three Asian rhinoceros species, weighing up to 2,200
Javan Rhinoceros
The Javan rhinoceros lives in dense tropical forests on the island of Java in southern Indonesia and in some parts of Vietnam.
Sumatran Rhinoceros
The Sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) has been hunted so extensively that fewer than 300 animals survive in fragmented populations in Malaysia and Indonesia. Between 1985 and 1995 the number of Sumatran rhinos declined by 50 percent due to poaching.
