General formula of Passive Voice

 Past Participle = PP

 PP = V-ed or V3 (column 3 of the irregular verbs table)


3. Use: The passive is used in many main ways:
* When people want to focus on a thing that happened not who or what did it.
Ex: The trees were uprooted last week.( We only concerned about the trees).
* When we do not want to take responsibility for something or someone.
Ex: The vase was stolen.
* When people do not know exactly about the subject.
Ex: The form has to be signed.

* When we are more interested in the action than the doer.
Ex:: This road was being repaired.
* However, the passive voice is not used when we want to focus on the person or thing that does the action.
Ex: You should do exercise ( Not : This exercise should be done.)

NOTES
Passive voice only apply transitive verb. That means verb needs a object.

 With irregular verbs you need to watch in column 3 of the irregular verbs table.

Agent may be person or thing of action.

“By” doesn’t have to use when “subjects” (active) are:
 Personal pronouns: They, I, You, We
 Indefinite pronouns: No one, everyone, someone, anyone.....

GROUP WORK: Rewrite the following story about Tarzan, using the passive in the numbered sentence.
Many years ago, Tarzan lived in a very dense forest with a Gloria family. (1) The Gloria fed and took after him. They lived very happy. (2) One day, while the Gloria was teaching Tarzan how to find foods, some men appeared. (3) They killed many animals, and burnt the forest.
