Unit 10: CONSERVATION
Period 5: Language focus
I. Pronunciation
/b/ /p/
Listen and repeat:
bee pea
ban pan
bad Paul
cab cap
bright provide
back power
/b/: two lips combine together slightly, the airstream escapes through the mouth.
/p/: two lips combine tightly, the airstream is completely stopped and suddenly released.
Listen and repeat the minimal pairs:
cab cap
bee pea
ban pan
big pig
Listen and repeat:
a big pool
baby’s parents
the pink bag
Practise the sentences in the textbook from the end to the beginning
II.Grammar: The passive voice
1.Formation:
The classroom has been cleaned
The window was broken
=> Be + past participle
The passive voice can be used in different tenses.
e.g: The passive forms of “break” on the wallchart.
2. Usage: The passive voice is used in 3 ways:
When we don’t want to take responsibility for something.
e.g: The house will be painted soon.
When we want to focus on a happenning, not who or what did it.
e.g: The flat has been broken into.
When we want to avoid using subjects like “one, someone, they…..”.
e.g: The apple was thrown away.
However, if we want to mention to whom or what did the action, we can use “ Be + past participle + by O”.
e.g: The letter was written by my brother.
This picture is being drawn by him.
3. Practise: Do exercise 1 and 2 in the textbook
Exercise 1:
1. were reported
2. grow
3. be spoken
4. am not invited
5. are being built
Exercise 2:
1. came; had started/ had been started; were
2. is standing; is being photographed
3. Have…been told
4. was being laid;decided
5. will…be planted
III. Consolidation
The main points of the lesson:
- Pronunciation of the sounds /b/ and /p/ in words, phrases and sentences.
- The passive voice: structure, usage.
IV. Homework
- Learn the way how to pronounce and distinguish the sounds /b/ and /p/ in words, phrases and sentences.
- Make 3 sentences using the passive voice.
- Do exercise 3 in the textbook.
