Complaints & Giving opinions and advice
Lead-in
Discuss the situations in the pictures and say what conflicts each one may lead to.
Parents may not like when their teenage children go out with their friends late at night.
Parents may complain about their children’s untidiness.
Parents may disapprove of their children’s appearance.
Pre-speaking
Activity 1 : Match ( Textbook, page 11)
Read about three situations facing teenagers. Match them with the problem a,b or c
Work individually in 3 minutes and give answers.

Activity2-Match what your parents say with what you wish
Which group is quicker? Parents or children ?

Activity 3 : Brainstorm as many ideas as possible ( Two groups “old” and “ young ” write on the blackboard )
Complaints that you may hear in family
My children don’t study enough
My parents are always trying to control me
Activity 4 : Work in pairs. Tell your partner what you and your parents complain about. Give advice on how to solve the problem.
Practise this dialogue and then make your own
A: What kind of conflicts do you get into with your parents ?
B: well, I don’t like the way my mum keeps telling me what to do all the time. What should I do ?
A : I think you should talk to her and explain how you feel. You should also show her that you are responsible and mature
B : Thanks. I’ll try. How about you and your parents ?
A: My dad is always comparing me with Lan, the girl living next door. He says that Lan is more studious than me and helps her parents with the household chores.
B: Perhaps you should make friends with Lan if your parents like her.
Activity 5 : questions and answers
Do you want to hear complaints or compliments from your parents ?
3. What do you think you should do to avoid being scolded and to be praised by your parents ?
4. Let’s watch a video. What lesson do you learn from it ?
2. Why do you think parents often complain to their children ?
Homework
Write a paragraph (about 100 – 120 words) about Conflicts and Solutions
