Pay attention to the sound /əʊ/ and /ʌ/
We pronounce /əʊ/ when:
-“o” is usually pronounce /əʊ/ when it is the last letter of the word: go, no, …
-“oa” is pronounce /əʊ/ when in the word has one syllable and ends with a consonant or consonants: coat, road, …
-“ou” can pronounce /əʊ/: soul, dough, …
-“ow” are pronounce /əʊ/: slow, know, …
We pronounce /ʌ/ when:
-“o” usually pronounce /ʌ/ when it in one syllable word and in stress syllables in words with many syllables: come, some, …
-“u” usually pronounce /ʌ/ when the word end with “u + consonant”: but, cup, …
-“oo” can pronounce /ʌ/ in these circumstances : blood, flood…
-“un” are pronounce / ʌ / when it’s the begin of the word : unhappy, untidy…
-“ou” usually pronounce /ʌ/ when the word end with “ou + one consonant / two consonants”: country, couple, …
