1.Gerund
a.The form:
A gerund = Verb + “ING”
- As the subject of the sentence
→Eg1: Singing helps you feel more comfortable.
- As a complement of the verb “Tobe”
→Eg2: Mary’s hobby is swimming
- After prepositions
→ Eg3: Peter is very good at learning Maths
- After a number of “pharasal verbs”which are composed of “adverb+preposiion”
Eg4: I look forward to hearing from you soon
b.The use of Gerund
-in compound nouns
Eg: a swimming pool, birth watching
- After some expression
Eg: can’t help, cant’t stand, It’t no use/good, be worth
→ I can’t stand being stuck in traffic

Complete each of the following sentences with approciate gerund of the verbs from the box.

2.Present Participle
a. Form: Verb + “ING”
b.The use:
- As a part of the continuous form of a verb
Eg1: We are learning English now
- After verbs of movement( verb+ present participle)
Eg2: Peter used to go fishing at the weeken
- After verbs of perception in the form: verb +object+ present participle
Eg3: I can smell something burning
See, watch, observe, smell, hear
NOTE:
The difference between two forms:
The verb of perception
+ object+ present participle
+object + Verb (bare-inf)
Refers to an incomplete action/a part of action
Refers to a complete action
Eg: I heard Mai playing the piano
Eg: I heard Mai play the piano
Mean: She had started before I heard her, and maybe went on afterward
Mean: I heard her complete performance
- As an adjective
Eg: It was an interesting film
- Waste/Spend + time/money expression+ present participle
Eg: I spend three hours a day learning English
Eg: Don’t waste time playing games.
- To replace a part of a sentence
Eg: Mary sang to herself. She walked down the road
→ Singing to herself, Mary walked down the road
+ two actions occur the same time, and are done by the same person)
+ one action follows very quickly after another done b the same person
Eg: He logged off the computer and left the house.
→ Logging off the cmputer, he left the house
