a. We use the simple past for actions or states that started and ended in the past.
* With adverbs of time:yesterday,lastnight/week/month/ year. In 2000, five minutes ago, three years ago…

Past form with “wish”
Example:
a.
S1: Where does your friend live?
S2:She lives in an apartment, but she wishes she lived in a house.
b.
S1: Can you stay at your grandparents’ longer?
S2: I wish I could but I can’t.
Notes:
a. We used “wish” to express a desire for smething that doesn’t exist at present.
b. The past form doesn’t indicate past time , but an unreal situation.
