Unit 2: School talks
Period 5: Language focus
Time allotted: 45 minutes
I. Aims: By the end of the lesson Ss will be able to:
+ know how to distinguish and pronounce the sounds: / a: /, / ^ /
+ distinguish the usage of gerund and to- infinitive and how to use them.
+ know how to work in pairs or in groups.
II. Teaching aids: Textbook, handouts, poster.
III. Anticipated problems: Ss may find it difficult to pronounce the sounds / a: /, / ^ /, so T should prepare a lot of practice for Ss.

I. Warm-up ( 5’)
Game: Slap the board
Poster with the words:
Study, far, farmer, love, father, come.
Lead- in: Today we are going to distinguish and pronounce the vowels / a: /, / ^ / and learn about gerund as well as to –infinitive.
T gives some instructions: “Look at the poster. I will read a word, listen to me carefully and then slap the word I read out. The group with more correct answer and slap faster will be the winner.
- T fixes the poster with the words: study, far, farmer, love, father, come.
- T divides class into 2 teams, invites 2 Ss from 2 teams.
Checking instruction:
What are you going to do?
Who will be the winner?
T lets Ss play the game.
II. Presentation ( 10’)
1. Pronunciation: / a: /, / ^ /

2. Grammar:
+ Gerund
Usage:
Gerund: Used after some verbs: avoid, practice, enjoy, stop, suggest, mind, keep, finish,risk…
To- infinitive: after some verbs such as agree, decide, expect, hope, threat, try, want, plan…
Note:
Gerund can be used after prepositions, as well as be a subject, subject complement.
To- infinitive can be used in some structure such as: enough, too + adj, it is + adj + to- inf…
+ Some verbs can use both gerund or to- inf.
Remember+ v-ing: refer to the past.
Remember+ to inf: refer to an action in the future
forget + V- ing: refer to the past.
Forget+ to- inf : refer to the action in the future.
Regret+ to inf: refer to the future
Regret+ V- ing: refers to the past.
Try+ V- ing: means experiment
Try + to inf: make an effort.
Stop+ to inf: refers to purpose.
Stop+ V- ing: is the object of the verb.
- T sticks a poster. ( see appendix)
- T reads out the words twice.
- T asks Ss to read the words in each column out loud in chorus twice.
- T calls on some Ss to read the words individually.
- T listens and corrects Ss’ pronunciation
- T gives some examples:
Ex1: They enjoy going fishing in the summer holiday.
Ex2: They want to go to the cinema on Sunday.
- T asks Ss the differences between 2 examples.
- T gives Ss the usage of gerund and to- infinitive
- T gives some notes
III. Practice (15’).
